President Trump Claims He Told Federal Reserve Chair ‘Do What You Want’ on Interest Rate Hike Vote

President Donald Trump apparently offered some advice to Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh before the board unanimously voted to raise interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday, September 16.

On Wednesday, a reporter asked the commander in chief, 80, “Do you still have confidence in the Fed chair Kevin?” after interest rates were raised for the first time in three years, a move Trump disagrees with.

“Yeah, I do. I mean I’m relying on Kevin,” he responded per a video shared on YouTube. “I talked to Kevin, and I said, ‘You might as well vote with the board because it’s not going to matter. The board is very hostile. They’re very political. They’re doing the wrong thing. They’re a bunch of politicians. They are people put on by politicians.”

Another reporter asked if Trump tried to “convince” Warsh, 56, not to vote for the interest rate hike.

“I said ‘do what you want’ because it doesn’t matter because he doesn’t have the votes,” he admitted.

He also theorized, “They’re raising the rates to make Trump do as bad as he can possibly do. The problem they have is that we have the greatest economy in history.”

On his Truth Social platform Wednesday, Trump further insisted, “Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less, because we are the Best Credit in the World — BY FAR.”

During a press conference Wednesday, a reporter asked Warsh what his “message” to Trump is, given that the president has repeatedly asked for lower interest rates.

“I’ve got nothing for you on the discussion with the president,” Warsh said.

When asked about Trump again, Warsh insisted “I don’t have anything for you on discussions with the president.”

“I’m not a Wall Street newsletter. Part of the independence of the Federal Reserve is we stay in our lane,” he remarked. “Independence is a two-way street. We let people that do trade policy and fiscal policy stay in their lane, too. That’s how we can stand up here and call them the way we see them.”
